Kaiwa

A modern and Open Source Web client for XMPP

Visit Kaiwa

Kaiwa is an open source web client for the XMPP chat protocol, intended to be used with the Prosody XMPP server. It provides a browser-based interface for conversations while the server handles accounts, message storage and protocol extensions.

Core capabilities include rooms, private messages with contact lists, server-side archives via Message Archive Management (XEP-0313), chat syncing through Message Carbons (XEP-0280), avatars, sound and desktop notifications, @username and @all mentions, OEmbed previews for images, videos and sounds, and reliable connections with send confirmation and auto-reconnection via Stream Management (XEP-0198). When LDAP is in use, user management and profile updates are handled directly in Kaiwa. Other XMPP clients can connect to the same Prosody server.

Kaiwa is packaged as a Docker image alongside Docker images for Prosody and LDAP, with each component replaceable by an existing service such as OpenLDAP or PostgreSQL. Deployment is offered through an online tool that creates a configured DigitalOcean droplet, or manually by following the README instructions. The project is open source, with its code available on GitHub.
