Privacy policy
What personal data What is my alternative collects, why, who processes it for us and what your rights are.
Last updated October 6, 2026
This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use whatismyalternative.com, why we collect it and what you can do about it. The short version: you can browse the whole site without giving us anything. We only collect personal data when you write to us, and we don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
Who we are
The site is operated by [OPERATOR NAME], [OPERATOR ADDRESS] ("we", "us"). We are the controller of the personal data described here. For anything related to privacy, email contact@whatismyalternative.com.
What we collect and why
When you browse the site
Like every website, our hosting provider receives technical data with each request: your IP address, browser type, the page you asked for and the time. It is used to deliver pages, keep the site secure and investigate errors, and it is kept in short-lived server logs. We don't build profiles from it, and we don't store your IP address in our own database.
When you search, your query is sent to our server to find matching products. We don't store searches against you.
Product logos are fetched by our server and served from our own domain, so your browser doesn't contact third-party logo services when you view a page.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
When you use the contact form
We collect your name, email address, the topic you chose and your message. We store the message in our database and forward it to our inbox by email, so we can reply to you.
To keep spam out, the form uses Cloudflare Turnstile. It checks signals from your browser, and your IP address is sent to Cloudflare to verify that you are a person. The check doesn't ask you to solve puzzles in most cases.
Legal basis: taking steps at your request and our legitimate interest in answering messages and preventing abuse (Article 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR).
How long we keep it: as long as we need it to handle your request and any follow-up, and no longer than two years after our last exchange. Then we delete it.
Information about software companies
Listings describe companies and their products, not people. They are built from information the companies publish on their own websites and from public directories. If a listing includes personal data about you, such as your name as a founder, and you want it changed or removed, contact us.
Cookies
We don't use advertising, analytics or tracking cookies, so we don't show a cookie banner.
The site may set only strictly necessary cookies:
- Spam protection: Cloudflare Turnstile may set a cookie on the contact page while it verifies the form.
- Language: if you switch the site's language, a cookie remembers your choice.
- Editors: the admin area uses a login cookie. It applies only to our editors.
If we add analytics in the future, we will update this policy first and ask for consent where the law requires it.
Who processes data for us
We use these service providers. Each one processes data only on our instructions and under a data processing agreement:
| Provider | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel Inc. | Hosting and server logs | United States and EU |
| Neon Inc. | Database | EU region |
| Cloudflare Inc. | Spam protection on the contact form | Global network |
| Resend Inc. | Delivering contact form messages to our inbox | United States |
Where data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, the transfer is covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
We don't sell personal data and we don't share it for advertising.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- get a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- have it corrected if it is wrong
- have it deleted
- restrict or object to how we use it
- receive it in a portable format
To use any of these rights, email contact@whatismyalternative.com. We will reply within one month. You can also complain to the data protection authority in the country where you live or work.
Children
The site is meant for people choosing software for work and isn't aimed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle personal data, we will update this page and the date at the top. For significant changes, we will also say so on the site.
