ShadowCrypt

A research browser extension that encrypts text you type into web pages.

Visit ShadowCrypt

ShadowCrypt is a browser extension developed by the WebBlaze team at UC Berkeley with collaborators at the University of Maryland, presented as a peer-reviewed paper at ACM CCS 2014. It encrypts text entered into web pages so that content is protected before it leaves the field, with encryption toggled per field and a dedicated secure input window for cases where the page interprets typed text as keyboard shortcuts.

The extension includes key management through its options page, where keys are created for specific domain URLs, and key sharing via export and import strings for collaborators. Encryption is toggled with a keyboard shortcut, and a separate shortcut opens the secure input window. It runs as a Chrome extension.

ShadowCrypt is aimed at users who want to encrypt text on web pages and at small groups collaborating through shared keys. The project notes that it is a research project and may not provide the level of security required for a given threat model, and directs users to read the paper and understand the threat model before use.
