searchcode

searchcode is an MCP server that provides structured code intelligence for large language models, letting them analyze, search, and retrieve code from public git repositories without cloning them. It addresses the token and tool-call overhead AI assistants face when investigating unfamiliar codebases, returning pre-computed structured data instead of raw files. A web interface accepts a GitHub URL to generate a repository dossier covering languages, complexity, tech stack, and code quality, with side-by-side comparison of two repositories.

The service exposes six tools: code_analyze (language breakdowns, complexity metrics, tech stack detection, code quality, and secret scanning via security_summary), code_search (full-text search with boolean, regex, and structural filters), code_get_file (full files, line ranges, or symbols with adjacent declarations), code_get_files (batch retrieval of up to 10 files), code_file_tree (directory structure with filters and fuzzy file finding), and code_get_findings (severity- and category-filtered quality and insecure-code findings). It integrates with Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code/Copilot, Claude Desktop, Gemini CLI, Amp, OpenCode, Crush, Codex, and LM Studio, and offers a REST API as an alternative to MCP. An Enterprise edition ships as a Docker image with a Helm chart for Kubernetes, supporting SSH key and HTTPS token authentication for private repositories. The hosted service is free during beta with no signup or API key.
