OPNsense
An open source, feature rich firewall and routing platform, offering cutting-edge network
OPNsense is an open source firewall and routing platform built on FreeBSD, providing stateful firewalling for IPv4 and IPv6, multi-WAN load balancing and failover, virtual private networking, and high availability. It addresses the need for network protection, traffic control, and continuous uptime in a single system.
Core capabilities include integrated IPsec, OpenVPN, and pluggable support for Tinc and WireGuard, hardware failover with CARP state synchronization, RRD-based reporting and monitoring with NetFlow analysis, and inline intrusion prevention using Suricata with Emerging Threats rules. The platform is modular, with an in-house Model View Controller framework and API access, and includes one-time password authentication and an update mechanism for security patches.
OPNsense is available as a free platform and as a Business Edition, which adds features such as a Web Application Firewall, Proxy Access, Extended Blocklist, OPNcentral, an integrated GeoIP database, a commercial firmware repository, and an official Open Virtualisation Image. The Business Edition also includes an e-book and e-learning course. Official hardware appliances are offered separately.
