openmediavault is a network attached storage (NAS) solution built on Debian Linux. It addresses the need for centralized file storage and sharing in small or home office environments, providing a web-based administration interface that simplifies setup and management without requiring deep technical knowledge.
The software includes core services such as SSH, SMB/CIFS, NFS, RSync, and a DAAP media server. Volume management supports software RAID (JBOD/0/1/5/6), multiple file systems (EXT4, XFS, Btrfs), and snapshot management on Btrfs. Networking features include link aggregation, Wake On Lan, and IPv6. Monitoring capabilities cover S.M.A.R.T., syslog, SNMP (read-only), and email notifications. A plugin system extends functionality with modules for antivirus, UPS management, Kubernetes, Docker Compose, two-factor authentication, and backup to Microsoft OneDrive or USB drives.
openmediavault is designed for small offices and home offices, though it can be used in other scenarios. It is released under the GPLv3 license and is available as a free download. The software is packaged as a complete operating system image that can be installed on compatible hardware.
