Nmap

Free and open source utility for network discovery and security auditing.

Visit Nmap

Nmap (Network Mapper) is a free and open source utility for network discovery and security auditing. It uses raw IP packets to determine which hosts are available on a network, what services and versions they offer, what operating systems they run, and what packet filters or firewalls are in use. It is designed to scan large networks but also works against single hosts, and is used for tasks such as network inventory, service upgrade scheduling, and monitoring host or service uptime.

The suite includes the command-line Nmap executable, Zenmap (an advanced GUI and results viewer), Ncat (a data transfer, redirection, and debugging tool), Ndiff (for comparing scan results), and Nping (a packet generation and response analysis tool). Nmap supports TCP and UDP port scanning mechanisms, OS detection, version detection, and ping sweeps, among other techniques. It runs on major operating systems including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and others, with official binary packages available for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. Nmap is available for free download with full source code under its license, and documentation includes man pages, whitepapers, tutorials, and a book.
