I2P (Invisible Internet Project) is a decentralized, peer-to-peer overlay network for anonymous communication. It routes data through multiple encrypted layers across volunteer-operated nodes, hiding the sender's and receiver's locations. The network is designed for private websites, messaging, and data sharing, with traffic encrypted end-to-end and resistance to recognition and blocking by censors.
The core software, written in Java, includes a router that maintains connections to the network, a BitTorrent client, email, and a static website template. Additional applications can be added via the router console. The network uses NTCP2 and SSU2 transports, provides forward secrecy for all connections, and features self-authenticating cryptographic addresses. I2P has its own internal DNS for self-hosting and mirroring content, along with a network database based on a modified Kademlia DHT for distributing routing information.
I2P is open source and maintained by volunteers. It is packaged as free software with no stated pricing tiers or seat-based licensing.
