HandBrake

The open source video transcoder

Visit HandBrake

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed video transcoder built by volunteers for converting video from nearly any format to modern, widely supported codecs. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux and processes common multimedia files as well as unprotected DVD and BluRay sources.

It offers built-in device presets and universal profiles, with basic and advanced encoding options. Outputs include MP4, MKV and WebM containers, video encoders such as AV1, H.265, H.264, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VP8 and VP9 with optional hardware acceleration, and audio encoders including AAC/HE-AAC, MP3, FLAC, AC3, E-AC3, Opus and Vorbis, plus audio pass-thru for several track formats. Other capabilities include title/chapter and range selection, batch scanning and queueing, chapter markers, subtitle support (VobSub, CEA-608, SSA, SRT), constant quality or average bitrate encoding, VFR and CFR support, video filters (deinterlacing, decomb, denoise, detelecine, deblock, grayscale, colourspace, cropping, scaling), live and static previews, and HDR pass-thru.

HandBrake is free and open source, with most of its source code under GNU GPL version 2 and portions under BSD 3-Clause.
