EtherApe
A graphical network monitor for Unix modeled after etherman
EtherApe is a graphical network monitor for Unix that visualizes network activity, with hosts and links changing size according to traffic and protocols shown in color. It captures traffic live from a network connection or reads packets from a tcpdump capture file, supporting Ethernet, FDDI, PPP, SLIP and WLAN interfaces along with encapsulated formats such as Linux cooked and PPI.
The tool offers link layer, IP and TCP display modes, pcap-syntax network filtering, configurable display averaging and node persistence, and name resolution via standard libc functions with optional ARES resolver integration. Clicking a node or link opens a detail dialog with protocol breakdown and traffic statistics, while protocol and summary dialogs show global and per-node statistics. Node statistics can be exported to file as XML or JSON, and display layouts include centering a single node, arranging chosen nodes in an inner circle, or a column-based mode.
EtherApe is open source software released under the GNU General Public License, with documentation integrated as a manual.
