Duplicity

Encrypted, bandwidth-efficient directory backup tool using the rsync algorithm

Visit Duplicity

Duplicity is a command-line backup utility for POSIX-like systems that backs up directories by producing encrypted tar-format volume archives and uploading them to a local or remote file server. It uses librsync so incremental archives record only the parts of files that changed since the last backup, and GnuPG to encrypt and/or sign archives so the storage server cannot read or alter them. The package also includes rdiffdir, which extends librsync's rdiff to directories.

Backups follow a traditional scheme: a full archive first, then incrementals containing only changed data. Supported backends include local filesystem, scp/ssh, ftp, rsync, WebDAV, Tahoe-LAFS, Amazon S3, and others such as Backblaze B2, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and rclone. Archives preserve deleted files, Unix permissions, directories, symbolic links, fifos, and device files, but not hard links. Related tools include duply, a shell front end for managing backup job profiles with pre/post scripts and batch mode, and deja-dup. Duplicity is free software under the GPL and is available via snap, pip, PPA, or source repository, and is included in Fedora, Debian, and Ubuntu distributions.
