Carbide

A browser-based notebook programming environment.

Visit Carbide

Carbide is a browser-based notebook programming environment that requires no installation or setup. It supports JavaScript/ES2015 through built-in BabelJS support, including ES7 async/await features, and can run code either locally in the editor or in a separate window for DOM access. Modules are imported automatically from NPM or GitHub, and notebooks are saved and loaded directly to and from GitHub Gists in a human-readable plain text format.

Results appear as probes between lines of code, which can be inspected by selecting an expression. Clicking a probe opens visualization widgets to the right of the code, offering multiple representations of data such as color, text, JSON, sliders, charts, and matrices. These widgets can also manipulate data, using backpropagation to run programs backwards and solve for inputs. Custom widgets can be created as React components. Code is organized into cells with file names, supporting ES6 import/export syntax for sharing information between cells. Comments live in a rich text sidebar.

Carbide is aimed at developers working with JavaScript in a notebook-style environment. It is currently in alpha.
