BOLD, the Barcode of Life Data Systems, is a data platform that supports DNA-based species identification and monitoring. It addresses the challenge of accurately identifying and tracking biodiversity by providing a centralized system for the acquisition, storage, validation, analysis, and publication of DNA barcodes, integrating molecular, morphological, and distributional data.
The platform includes a public data portal with millions of records and features the Barcode Index Number (BIN) system, an automated method for clustering DNA barcode sequences into operational taxonomic units that usually correspond to species. Version 5, released in 2024, introduced a revamped data model, support for a network of mirrors, new APIs, and improved performance. The platform also supports integration with major biodiversity databasing initiatives to ensure interoperability.
