960 Grid System

Streamline web development with standardized dimensions.

Visit 960 Grid System

The 960 Grid System is a CSS grid framework that provides commonly used dimensions based on a fixed width of 960 pixels. It is intended to streamline web layout and prototyping by giving designers and developers a consistent set of column measurements to work from.

The framework offers 12, 16, and 24 column variants, which can be used separately or together. The 12-column grid uses 60-pixel portions, the 16-column grid uses 40-pixel increments, and the 24-column grid uses 30-pixel columns with 10-pixel gutters and a 5-pixel container buffer. Each column includes 10-pixel margins on the left and right, creating 20-pixel gutters. The system includes CSS files, printable sketch sheets, and design templates for tools such as Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, GIMP, Inkscape, OmniGraffle, Visio, and others. App plugins for Photoshop and Fireworks are included in the download, and a Dreamweaver extension is available separately. Layout is controlled through classes such as container_XX, grid_XX, prefix_XX, suffix_XX, alpha, and omega, with push_XX and pull_XX classes allowing elements to be rearranged independently of their order in the markup.

The system is aimed at web designers and developers working on rapid prototyping or production layouts. It is free to use and may be repurposed, and it is licensed under GPL and MIT.
