WebThings
An open platform for monitoring and controlling devices over the web
WebThings is an open source implementation of the Web of Things, a set of standards that gives connected devices web URLs and a common data model and protocol so they can be linked, discovered and made interoperable. It addresses the fragmentation of IoT by providing a unifying application layer over different underlying protocols, enabling devices to be monitored and controlled over the web.
The project comprises three components. WebThings Gateway is a software distribution for smart home hubs with a web-based interface for monitoring and controlling devices, a rules engine for automation, and an add-ons system for bridging existing smart home devices. WebThings Framework provides reusable libraries in Node.js, Python, Java, Rust and C++ (for Arduino) for building devices that expose the Web Thing Protocol. WebThings Cloud offers remote access through an end-to-end encrypted tunnel between a gateway or device and a client.
WebThings is aimed at smart home users who want to manage devices directly without a middleman, and at developers building IoT devices or add-ons. It is distributed as an open source project with documentation and community contribution channels; no specific plans, trials or editions are described.
