Spree Commerce

Spree Commerce is an open source, API-driven eCommerce platform built on Ruby on Rails. It addresses the need to run complex commerce models—B2B wholesale, multi-vendor marketplaces, multi-tenant SaaS, multi-store, multi-region, and omnichannel operations—on a single backend that can be self-hosted without platform fees. It supports headless setups through a REST API, a TypeScript SDK, and a production-ready Next.js storefront.

Core capabilities include advanced product management with variants, metafields, categories, and bulk CSV operations; a flexible pricing engine with price lists, customer group pricing, volume tiers, zone-based pricing, and per-account overrides; customer segmentation with buyer organizations, role-based permissions, gated storefronts, and account approval workflows; and international support for multi-currency, multi-language, zone-based tax, and regional shipping. Sales Channels let online, in-store, wholesale, and mobile surfaces share one backend with separate catalogs and order routing. Payment Sessions work with providers such as Stripe, Adyen, and PayPal, with 3D Secure and webhooks. Integrations include Avalara and TaxJar for tax calculation. Developer tooling includes OpenAPI 3.0 documentation, typed SDKs, a CLI with code generators, an upgrade tool, events, webhooks, and dependency injection.

Spree is aimed at developers and teams building headless storefronts, B2B portals, marketplaces, or multi-tenant commerce, as well as organizations migrating from SaaS or legacy platforms. It is open source and self-hostable, with a free sandbox for experimentation and a local install command for starting a project.
