Quad9 is a free, recursive, anycast DNS resolver operated by the Swiss-based Quad9 Foundation. It replaces a device's default ISP or enterprise DNS configuration, checking each lookup against a list of known threats and blocking connections to host names associated with malware, phishing, spyware, and botnets. The service states that no data containing the user's IP address is logged, and connections can employ encryption when the system supports it.
The platform draws on threat intelligence from more than twenty partners to resolve or deny lookups in real time. Resolver clusters are distributed across Internet Exchange points in many countries, with queries routed to the nearest operational system. Setup guides are available for configuring devices to use the service.
Quad9 is intended for individual users, mobile devices, IoT systems, and network operators seeking DNS-level protection. It is provided as a free service; no editions, trials, or seat-based or usage-based packaging are described.
