Peercoin
The pioneer of Proof-of-Stake
Peercoin is a blockchain network launched in 2012 that combines proof-of-stake consensus for network security with proof-of-work for coin distribution. It is designed as a base-layer settlement network, with a deliberately simple protocol intended to remain secure and scalable while supporting additional layers built on top. Coin holders participate in protocol governance through voting, and stakeholders can mint blocks by holding Peercoin in a wallet.
The network uses proof-of-stake minting, where stakeholders are occasionally selected to process transactions and are rewarded with new PPC. Proof-of-work mining uses the hashcash double iterated SHA-256 algorithm, compatible with Bitcoin mining hardware. Peercoin provides wallets for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux, along with command-line options. PeerAssets is the project's second-layer solution for tokens. The project also offers documentation, block explorers, a whitepaper, and community channels including a forum, Discord, and Telegram.
Peercoin is intended for users who want to participate in blockchain security through minting, developers building on the network, and those seeking a decentralized settlement layer. The project is open-source and community-governed; no pricing, subscription, or edition information is provided.
