Open Exchange Rates is a JSON API for live and historical foreign exchange rates covering over 200 worldwide and digital currencies. Rates are collected from multiple providers, blended algorithmically, and served in JSON format, with end-of-day rates available historically back to 1 January 1999. The service is designed for straightforward integration without complex queries or long-term contracts.
Capabilities include live and historical rates, time-series requests, and currency conversion. Community-maintained open source libraries and plugins are available for many languages and frameworks, alongside documentation and API status pages.
Plans are packaged by update frequency and monthly request volume: a Free Plan with hourly updates and a capped request allowance, then Developer, Enterprise, and Unlimited tiers with progressively faster updates, higher or unlimited request limits, and additional features such as time-series and conversion requests. Annual payment is offered with a discount. Separate VIP service levels add faster live updates, bid-ask and midpoint prices, OHLC-average and intraday historical prices, dedicated phone support, a guaranteed uptime SLA, and unlimited requests.
