mpv is a free, open source, cross-platform media player built for the command line. It handles a wide range of media file formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types, and includes a small on-screen controller for basic playback control in place of a full graphical interface.

Features include scripting with a selection of user scripts, video output based on OpenGL, Vulkan, and D3D11 with video scaling, color management, frame timing, interpolation, and HDR, plus GPU video decoding through hardware decoding APIs across platforms, enabled at runtime. A C API lets mpv be used as a library and embedded in other applications. Installation, source code, and a repository are available, and the project is under active development.

mpv is aimed at users who work from the command line and want playback control through configuration and scripts, as well as developers integrating a media player into their own software. It is distributed as free and open source software; no paid editions, trials, or seat-based plans are described.
