Godot Engine is a free, open-source game engine distributed under the MIT license, designed for building 2D and 3D games, cross-platform projects, and XR experiences. It uses a node-and-scene authoring model where nodes serve as building blocks that compose into reusable scenes, with custom resources for data-driven elements.

The engine includes a dedicated 2D pipeline with pixel-based coordinates and a built-in tile map editor, alongside a 3D engine supporting OpenGL, Vulkan, Direct3D 12, and Metal renderers. Coding options include GDScript, C# via .NET, C++ through GDExtension, and community bindings for languages such as Rust, Nim, Python, and JavaScript. OpenXR and WebXR support is built in, with the Godot XR Tools addon providing common XR features. Projects export to desktop, mobile, and web from a single codebase, with console releases handled through third-party publishers. The editor runs natively on various headsets.

Godot is suited to individual developers and teams building games or tools across platforms. It is available as a free download under the MIT license, with no contracts or fees; development snapshots and previous versions are also distributed.
