Docassemble is a free, open-source expert system for guided interviews and document assembly, built on Python, YAML, and Markdown. It runs a website that interviews users and, from the information gathered, can produce documents in PDF, RTF, or DOCX for download or e-mail. Interviews do not have to assemble a document; they can submit an application, direct users to other resources, store input, interact with APIs, or provide information.
Interviews are defined in YAML with Markdown text and Python logic, and the system determines which questions to ask and in what order, while still allowing developers to specify a sequence. Capabilities include a Word Add-in and .docx/.pdf templates, file sync with Google Drive or OneDrive, touchscreen signatures, live chat with screen sharing, machine learning and LLM-based conversation, SMS and e-mail, OCR, multilingual interviews, multiuser workflows, background tasks, security features such as server-side encryption and two-factor authentication, and APIs for third-party integration. Interviews can be packaged and shared via GitHub and PyPI.
Docassemble is a general-purpose platform, created for automating legal practice but applicable across fields. It is open-source under the MIT license, with documentation under CC BY 3.0, and can be deployed on multiple machines. Support is available through a Slack community and GitHub issues.
