It encourages the MVC pattern without requiring it, and includes built-in protection against CSRF and XSS attacks, along with context-sensitive escaping and CSP in version 4. Configuration is minimal, with database connection setup being the primary requirement.

The framework ships with a user guide covering an introduction, tutorial, how-to guides, and component reference documentation. Releases are available for download, and development takes place on GitHub. CodeIgniter is released under the MIT licence and is supported through a forum, Slack chat, and other community channels.
