Apache Helix

A cluster management framework for partitioned and replicated distributed resources

Visit Apache Helix

Apache Helix is a generic cluster management framework for automatically managing partitioned, replicated, and distributed resources hosted on a cluster of nodes. It handles reassignment of resources when nodes fail or recover, when the cluster expands, and when reconfiguration occurs. By abstracting common cluster management tasks behind a declarative state model, it separates coordination from core application logic.

Helix provides automatic assignment of resources and partitions to nodes, node failure detection and recovery, dynamic addition of resources and nodes, and a pluggable distributed state machine for managing resource state via state transitions. It also offers automatic load balancing and throttling of transitions, plus optional pluggable rebalancing for user-defined assignment. It can coordinate cluster-wide decisions such as scheduling maintenance tasks, repartitioning resources, notifying dependent systems of changes, and throttling system tasks.

Helix is intended for builders of distributed systems that need global coordination across nodes. It is available as an Apache Software Foundation open-source project, distributed under the Apache License, with multiple release versions available for download and a Maven dependency for integration.
