Japanese radicals, kanji, and vocabulary learning app using mnemonics and spaced rep

WaniKani is a web application for learning Japanese radicals, kanji, and vocabulary through mnemonics and a spaced repetition system. It addresses the challenge of memorizing large numbers of characters by teaching radicals as building blocks, then using them to form mnemonics for kanji and vocabulary, with lessons followed by scheduled reviews to reinforce retention.

Content is organized into levels, covering over 2,000 kanji and 6,000 vocabulary words. Lessons introduce each item with mnemonics, while an SRS algorithm adjusts the timing of reviews for each individual item based on your last session. Vocabulary items are validated by humans for common or useful usage.

WaniKani is aimed at self-learners and residents of Japan looking to improve their reading ability. It is available as a web application with a free trial to try the service.
