Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard

A MIDI events generator and receiver that drives a MIDI synthesizer

Visit Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard

Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard (VMPK) is a MIDI events generator and receiver. It does not produce sound on its own; instead, it sends MIDI events to a hardware or software synthesizer. You can play MIDI notes using the computer keyboard or the mouse, and you can display MIDI notes received from another instrument or MIDI file player by connecting that source to VMPK's input port.

VMPK provides MIDI IN and OUT ports that can be connected to other programs or physical MIDI interfaces through virtual MIDI cables. It can send program changes and controllers to a MIDI synthesizer, with instrument definitions supplied as .INS files (including General MIDI, Roland GS, and Yamaha XG) or imported from SoundFont files in .SF2 or DLS formats. Keyboard mapping is configurable through the GUI, with layouts stored as XML files; presets for Spanish, German, and French layouts are included, and preferences, selected bank and program, and controller values are saved between sessions. The application is built with Qt5 and Drumstick RT and runs on Linux, Windows, and Mac OSX.

VMPK is intended for musicians and developers working with MIDI setups who need a keyboard interface to drive a synthesizer or monitor incoming MIDI data. It is free software released under the GPL v3 license.
