Version Story
Document comparison and redlining for AI-native legal teams
Version Story is a hosted document comparison service that produces redlines from Word and PDF files, including scanned PDFs read with OCR. The comparison is computed by a rules-based engine written in Rust rather than a language model, so the same two versions always produce the same redline. It is available inside Claude and ChatGPT, as an MCP server, and as a REST API.
Inputs include DOCX, legacy DOC, native PDF, and scanned PDF. Outputs include DOCX with tracked changes, full PDF, changed-pages-only PDF, Markdown, and JSON, all derived from a single comparison. Beyond Compare, the product includes Track, which layers successive drafts into one tracked-changes history attributing changes to version and author, and Merge, which reconciles parallel revisions from multiple reviewers into one document and flags overwrites. Comparison detail covers paragraphs, tables, section cross-references, table of contents, comments, headers and footers, and footnotes and endnotes. AI features such as scanned-PDF conversion and Analytics reports are off by default.
Version Story is aimed at legal teams and developers working with contracts and other documents. It is packaged as a browser-based app and a hosted REST API and MCP server, with no SDK or on-premises version. The app offers a free trial and a demo request; the API supports a zero-day retention setting. Documents are processed in a private AWS VPC, with SOC 2 Type 2 examined controls, role-based access, and audit logs.
