Unlock Protocol is an open-source protocol for memberships and subscriptions represented as time-bound non-fungible tokens on smart contracts. It addresses the limitations of general-purpose NFT contracts by adding membership-specific controls such as expirations, renewals, recurring payments, and ongoing management of membership status. The protocol is collectively owned and community-governed through the Unlock DAO.

Its membership smart contracts, called Locks, support time constraints, pricing updates, onchain recurring payments, and checks of current membership status. Members receive Keys, which are membership NFTs. Onboarding options include email-based memberships, walletless airdrops, and integration with Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The protocol is designed for developers, creators, brands, and platforms building membership products, and is available as open-source software.
