Terragen is software for building, rendering and animating realistic natural environments. It lets users create worlds from scratch or import real-world terrain data, with control over weather, landscapes, rivers, lakes and oceans, suns, moons and stars, as well as shader networks for terrains, textures, micropolygon displacements, clouds and object distributions. It is used for visual effects in film, TV, game development, VR environments, museum exhibits and documentaries.

Terragen 4 combines procedural and heightfield terrains in one scene, with node-based cloud creation, a physically based atmosphere model simulating Rayleigh and Mie scattering and ozone, and a full planet model supporting detail from orbit to ground level. It imports terrains, texture maps, 3D models, cameras and light sources, and exports volumetric clouds (VDBs), heightmaps, geometry, texture maps and cameras. Rendering features include micro-polygon displacements, instancing, physically based volumetrics, path tracing and PBR materials, with global illumination and ray traced soft shadows. Objects can be placed in native TGO or OBJ format, and an RPC feature supports remote node placement. Terragen Sky is available in Early Access with a Sky Paint workspace for editing clouds with paint strokes.

Terragen is aimed at visual effects and 3D artists working across film, TV, games, VR and related fields. A free version is available for download, alongside an educational license program. Paid editions include a Professional version offered at indie-oriented pricing, available as a subscription or a perpetual license, with maintenance renewal options.
