Mapzen

An open, sustainable, and accessible mapping platform

Visit Mapzen

Mapzen is an open mapping platform that provides map display, search, routing, and geodata services for applications. It addresses the need to embed maps and location features across web and mobile environments using modular, open source components rather than a proprietary platform. The projects are maintained under the Linux Foundation, and commercial plans ended in 2018.

The platform includes map rendering for JavaScript, Android, iOS, and Tizen, with 2D and 3D styles and custom styling tools. Search and mobility features include Pelias geocoding and autocomplete, Valhalla routing for driving, biking, walking, and transit, plus isochrone, optimized route, time-distance matrix, and map matching services. Data offerings include Tilezen vector tiles, Terrain Tiles, elevation data, Who's On First gazetteer, Transitland transit schedules, and Libpostal address parsing.

Mapzen is aimed at developers and organizations building location-aware applications, from individual projects to larger deployments. The projects are open source under MIT, BSD, or Apache licenses, with data under CC-BY or public domain. The former commercial offering used usage-based pricing with free monthly allowances per service and charges for additional requests; commercial plans ended in 2018, and the tools are now available for self-hosting.
