Lantern
Nonprofit VPN for fast, private, unrestricted internet access
Lantern is a nonprofit VPN designed to help people reach blocked and sensitive websites and apps in heavily censored regions. By default, Smart Routing sends traffic that needs protection through Lantern's network while leaving other traffic direct, with an option to switch to Full Tunnel for complete coverage. The service adapts in real time to blocks using multiple censorship-resistant protocols and automatic method switching.
Core capabilities include Smart Routing, Split Tunneling with manual exceptions, server selection across 20+ countries with Smart Location, DNS-level ad and tracker blocking, and an optional Private Server mode for running Lantern on your own hardware or cloud account. Action Mode lets users in open regions securely share their connection with others. Lantern is open source, independently audited, and states that it does not collect browsing activity, connection history, or personal data. It runs on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Lantern is built by Brave New Software Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The free version includes a daily data limit in most countries, while Lantern Pro removes that limit and adds server selection, ad blocking, and support for up to five devices. Private Server is available on every tier without an upgrade, with users covering their own server costs.
