Krita

Krita is a free and open source painting program licensed under the GNU GPL and owned by its contributors. It addresses the need for affordable digital art tools, focusing on painting for cartoonists, illustrators, and concept artists. The project originated in the KDE community in the late 1990s and has been developed as a painting application since 2009.

Features include over 100 preloaded brushes, nine brush engines, brush stabilizers, vector and text tools, wrap-around mode for seamless textures, a resource manager for importing and sharing brush packs, and a customizable interface with over 30 dockers. The animation workspace supports layers, audio, timeline scrubbing, onion skinning, and export to video or still images. Other capabilities include drawing assistants, layer management, selection and transform tools, color management via LCMS and OpenColor IO, GPU acceleration, PSD support, HDR painting, and Python scripting with PyQt.

Krita is available at no cost with no subscriptions or trials, and can be extended through plugins and resource bundles. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, with training materials and an online artist community for support.
