Courier Mail Server is an integrated mail and groupware server for POSIX-based operating systems, combining ESMTP, IMAP, POP3, LDAP, SSL, and HTTP services in a single framework. It can act as an intermediate mail relay or deliver mail directly to mailboxes for one or multiple domains, using maildir as its native storage format with some support for legacy mbox files. Configuration is handled through plain text files and Perl scripts, with much of it adjustable from a web-based administration module.

The server includes an integrated IMAP, POP3, and webmail server with a personal event calendar, plus basic web-based calendaring and scheduling. It supports mailing list management with automatic bounce processing, integrated mail filtering with an API for external filters, SPF validation, STARTTLS, authenticated SMTP, DNS-based blacklists, and vanity configurations across multiple IP addresses. Authentication can use PAM, LDAP, PostgreSQL, or MySQL, with support for virtual mail accounts. The IMAP server, webmail server, and mail filter are also available as separate packages for use with other mail servers that store mail in maildirs.
