apfel is a free, open-source command-line tool that provides access to the on-device language model (LLM) built into macOS Tahoe (macOS 26 and later) on Apple Silicon Macs. It requires no model downloads, API keys, or configuration. It offers a CLI, an OpenAI-compatible HTTP server, and an interactive chat interface. All processing is done locally on the device, with no data leaving the Mac.
